St. Francis School in Sherwood is set in a quiet, wooded area.
The newest Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Portland is strengthening its education by expanding facilities and programs.
This year St. Francis opens a new gymnasium and library/media center.
“The additional space will add to the enrichment of the education of all the students at St. Francis,” say Vicky Smith and Lori Haugsten, two middle school teachers who have been at St. Francis from the beginning.
Parish and school members came together to donate. Fundraising efforts included the popular Friar Trot run/walk that occurs every May. The gym and media center will be used to host community events throughout the year, in addition to school activities. The gym will allow St. Francis to host Catholic Youth Organization sporting events. The media center will be used as a community meeting place.
In addition to new facilities, St. Francis is expanding the religion curriculum through the Virtue of the Month program. Teachers will work with students to identify people in history, characters in books, and members of the community who exhibit the virtue of the month. Each month-long study culminates at a Mass with a special recognition of students who have demonstrated that virtue. The school year begins with the virtue of hope.
