ST. BENEDICT — Mount Angel Seminary confers 38 degrees at a graduation ceremony set for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7. A baccalaureate Mass begins at 4 p.m. Friday, May 6.
Academics are one part of the formation at the seminary, which also helps students develop in spiritual, pastoral and human ways.

Mary Jo Tully, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Portland and a seminary professor, will give the address. Student speaker is Rev. Mr. Matt Ramsay from the Diocese of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

In 1887, five years after establishing their community, the Benedictine monks of Mount Angel Abbey opened Mount Angel College. Two years later, Archbishop William Gross asked them to attach a seminary to the college.

"Let us pray that Mount Angel may indeed be worthy of its name, and from its beautiful summit send forth angels in flesh and blood to promote, as not even angels in heaven can do, the glory of God on earth," Archbishop Gross said at the time.

Over the years, with the increasing costs and complexity of school operations, the college and its associated high school have closed.

The seminary, however, has maintained continuous operation.  Today it is home to almost 200 students, most of them seminarians from dozens of dioceses and religious orders.
