Archbishop Howard Class of 2011.

The 142nd graduating class departs from St. Mary's Academy in Portland at a ceremony set for Saturday, June 4. There are 129 seniors at the venerable all-girls school.

Elizabeth Peterkort is valedictorian and Micaela Deitch is salutatorian.

At St. Mary’s graduation symbolizes the culmination of four years of making life-long friends, learning gospel values and discovering passion on the field, in the science lab, on stage  or at a service location.

“It is difficult to walk away from a community and a place where so much growth has occurred," says Patricia Barr, principal. "Four years ago these students were excited fourteen-year-olds. Now they are confident, intelligent, amazing women."

To help with the transition to life beyond high school, St. Mary’s Academy tries hard to stay connected to alumnae.

Two days before graduation, the class of 2011 will be inducted into the Alumnae Association and follow in the footsteps of more than 10,000 women. The induction ceremony includes wise words from a recent graduate, a recognition of legacy families, and the pledge, lead by Marcia Moore Forman ’67, formalizing the passage.

The St. Mary’s Alumnae Association was originally founded by alumnae celebrating the 25th anniversary of the school’s inception in 1884. Graduates from 1870-1884 collected $50 in donations thanking St. Mary’s. For the past 127 years, graduates still give, via time, talents and resources. Through the school’s Alumnae Mentorship Program, graduates of all ages help current students, share life lessons, career and collegiate information and their St. Mary’s experience. In addition, the Alumnae Council works diligently to lead and inspire graduates to be involved in the school’s strategic priorities.

“In this fast-paced life, we want to keep our graduates connected to one another and to the school even when they find themselves at colleges on opposite coasts,” says Coralynn Arrigotti Petrie, a 1983 graduate and director of institutional advancement. “We want to celebrate their milestones and pray for them when they experience loss.”

“Being a St. Mary’s alumna carries with it a great honor,” said senior Lauren Fischer.

“We learned for four years the importance of our education, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my life, ever mindful of my time on Fifth Avenue.”
