Blanchet bids farewell to 65 seniors

SALEM — Baccalaureate for the 65 members of the class of 2011 from Blanchet School is set for 7 p.m. Friday, June 10 at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Salem. Graduation starts at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the school, 4373 Market St. NE in Salem.
Valedictorian is Emily Hillmer and salutatorians are Tevin Gianella and Jacob Gries
Hillmer maintains a 4.0 grade point average while participating in cross country, swimming, track, ballet, horseback riding, skiing and piano. She is also a member of the Spirituality Team and serves as secretary of the National Honor Society. Her list of awards includes 2010 Science Student of the Year, 2010 Spanish Student of the Year, most valuable cross country and track awards, state recognition for running and swimming and, most recently, she was named the KGW Student Athlete of the Month. Hillmer earned an SAT score of 2020 and plans to attend Carleton College in the fall.
Gries has maintained a 3.993 GPA, is a member of the Spirituality Team, is the director of activities for the National Honor Society, is a 12-sport Athlete (played three sports each of his four years in high school) and has served as captain of the football team. After completing pre-med studies at Gonzaga University, Jacob plans to attend medical school at Oregon Health Sciences University to become an orthopedic surgeon.
Gianella has earned a 3.986 GPA while being an officer for both the National Honor Society and student government. He is a member of the Spirituality Team and Earth Club and plans to attend Gonzaga University next fall.
Blanchet is in its 16th year of operation and 2011 marked the beginning of a new five-year strategy. The plan outlines enhancing the service program, offering additional advanced placement, foreign language and honors courses, improving technology for both students and faculty and funding facility improvements. The school has made significant progress toward achieving the goals, including the successful launch of a new website, the purchase of new laptops for each teacher and the completion of important building maintenance.
