Two Marist High 2007 graduates, Nicholas Balthrop and Jennifer Mussio have received Fulbright grants to Germany.

Both Balthrop and Mussio will graduate from the University of Portland with degrees in German Studies and Political Science this month.

They will be placed as English teaching assistants in German schools for the 2011-2012 academic year.

EUGENE — Marist Catholic High School will graduate 123 seniors in the class of 2011.

Graduation begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11 in the Marist gym. Kathy Yocum, English teacher, will be the commencement speaker. Baccalaureate Mass is set for 7 p.m. Friday, June 10 at St. Paul Church, 1201 Satre St. in Eugene.

Valedictorian is Blaine Werner, Jr. He is the son of Jennifer and Blaine Werner and will be attending Amherst College in the fall, majoring in political science. Werner is student body vice president and an AP Scholar with Distinction. As an Eagle Scout, he attended the 2007 World Scout Jamboree in England, and was the Senior Patrol Leader for the Oregon Trail Council Troop to the 2011 National Scout Jamboree. While at Marist, he played both varsity water polo and tennis for four years and was a member of the varsity chess team, national honor society, Mr. Spartan team, retreat team, and Christian Leadership. Werner also served as president of his 4-H club and raised the 2008 reserve grand-champion market swine for Lane County.  

Salutatorian is Carson Kiesewetter, son of John and Nancy Kiesewetter. He plans to pursue a master's in business administration at Gonzaga University in Spokane. In addition to being the President of the National Honor Society, Kiesewetter has participated as a varsity athlete in both golf and football. He has been a member of three state championship teams and received All-State honors as a kicker for the football team. He is a member of the school’s retreat team and volunteer program, and was heavily involved in community service as a result of his participation in Christian Leadership class. He was named Delta Rotary Club Student of the Month and Marist Athlete of the Month.
