EUGENE — In 2009, O’Hara School Art Teacher Anna Mueller experimented with an idea that has become an annual tradition: The Talking Art Museum.

Every spring, fourth graders work in pairs, spending a month studying about the life of a particular artist and then re-creating an art piece on foam board.

The project culminates with an interactive experience for students, teachers, staff and families. One member of each team dresses in character of their artist and the other becomes part of the art by placing his or her face in an opening that would have been the subject’s face. When attendees walk up to a painting, they push a button and the artwork comes to life, telling the viewer all about the piece. Then, attendees can ask questions of the artist, who is standing beside the artwork.

Examples of last year’s artists include Grant Wood, Henri Matisse, El Greco, Raphael, Picasso, Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent van Gogh.

Plans include taking the show on the road to other schools.
