Jesus on occasion woke early and went to a lonely place to pray.

The church has always encouraged Catholics to go aside to reconnect with the Almighty.

In the 21st century, retreat leaders say, it's even more important. Because of digital devices, silence and emptiness are at a premium, even though those are conditions for becoming aware of God's presence. Here is an overview of retreat opportunities in western Oregon.

Baptism in early Byzantine Christianity to be discussed
Two scholars will give a virtual tour of how baptism was celebrated and its meaning in ancient Christianity. Using archeological evidence and writings from the first six centuries of the church, Holy Cross Father Richard Rutherford and Alejandro Santana will show that baptisteries were as important as churches themselves.

Priest: Holy Spirit is inner music that links God's love, daily life

Paulist Father Bruce Nieli, an evangelizing troubadour, helps Catholics identify the Holy Spirit as “inner music of the soul.” The New York-based priest visited Portland last month to lead a workshop and retreat on how to listen to the Holy Spirit, which he says links the love of God to everyday life.

Seminarians honored

The Serra Club of Portland on March 7 hosted an annual dinner honoring seminarians from the Archdiocese of Portland. Families of seminarians were invited, too. More than 35 members of the vocations-fostering club welcomed more than 20 seminarians. After dinner, each seminarian introduced himself and family members and discussed his faith journey.

Shawl makers consider 'Mary, Undoer of Knots'

MOUNT ANGEL — An upcoming retreat focuses on a growing ministry of mercy at parishes in western Oregon. At a handful of churches, volunteers gather to knit or crochet shawls to be given to those who are ill or grieving. The blankets bring comfort and remind those who are suffering of the prayers of their friends.

Benedictine sister makes first profession
MOUNT ANGEL – Benedictine Sister Juanita (Helen) Thurlow made her first profession as a Benedictine Sister of Queen of Angels Monastery Tuesday, Feb. 10, in front of community members, family and friends. Taking the name of Juanita in honor of her grandmother and St. Juanita, she professed temporary vows of stability, obedience and fidelity to the monastic way of life through her spoken and written words.
