SALEM – At the Mass for the ninth annual Rosary Bowl NW, Archbishop Alexander Sample urged the crowd not to be discouraged by the difficult times we are facing. “We must remain people of hope, people of joy, people confident in the victory that our Lord Jesus Christ has already accomplished. We must see the moment as a Catholic moment for us”, Sample said on the first Saturday of October to hundreds of families who gathered to pray for World Peace.

Sister of Charity celebrates jubilee
Sister of Charity Dolores O’Dwyer (BVM) celebrated her diamond jubilee last month along with 26 other BVM sisters. The group included sisters celebrating 74, 73 and 70 years as BVM sisters. The group gathered at the Mount Carmel Motherhouse Chapel in Dubuque, Iowa, for a liturgy of thanksgiving.
Sister O’Dwyer entered the BVM congregation in 1941 and taught at St. Clare School, Portland.

Consenting to God: Contemplative prayer groups exist around state

LAKE OSWEGO — Mark Jacobi, a retired AT&T executive, says contemplative prayer has helped him “release the emotional garbage that keeps us from God.” Jacobi, a member of Our Lady of the Lake Parish here, reports that since he started contemplative prayer, his anxiety has abated, as have bouts with road rage. “You just say, ‘I consent, Lord,’”  explains Jacobi, who has the prayer as regular a part of his say as breakfast and coffee.

YLI raises funds for Mount Angel
The Young Ladies Institute, the oldest Catholic women’s organization in the U.S., this year gave $16,100 for the education of seminarians at Mount Angel. Since 2006, the organization in Oregon has donated more than $111,000 for seminarians.

Day to focus on prayer, consecrated life

Often, Catholics look to those in consecrated life as experts in prayer. Pope Francis declared 2015 the Year of Consecrated Life. The women and men in consecrated life in the Archdiocese of Portland have invited the public to join them for a celebration 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Valley Catholic High School.

Franciscan Jubilarians served schools, social justice, faith formation
The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia celebrated their annual jubilee weekend this summer for sisters who were celebrating 50, 70 and 75 years of religious profession. More than 200 sisters and lay associates gathered in Our Lady of Angels Chapel in Aston, Pa. for a Mass. The 27 Franciscan women represent 1,478 years of service throughout the U.S. as well as in other countries.
