Fr. Sean Weeks, pastor of St. Pius X Parish, joined Beaverton Crossfit a year and a half ago. “The Scriptures are filled with the truth that our bodies are temples and are meant to be cared for,” he says.

BEAVERTON — Walking into Beaverton Crossfit, Father Sean Weeks shakes hands with the coaching staff. They call him Father Sean. Wearing shorts, a T-shirt and his workout shoes, he doesn’t look like a priest. He’s not here to preach or serve but to take care of the temple that God gave him.

Juggling administration and the sacraments

At St. Anne Parish in Grants Pass, the office gets many calls requesting Father Tetzel Umingli. “And generally the new priests don’t get the calls at first,” says bookkeeper Sammie Burton.

“New priest” is putting it mildly: Archbishop Alexander Sample ordained Father Umingli together with Fathers Anthony Ahamefule and Arjie Garcia June 4, a scant month before the three young priests headed out to their first assignments as parochial vicars.

Holy Redeemer hosts Advent Camp
A manger filled with yarn to hold the infant Jesus sits in Holy Redeemer Church in North Portland. The strands of yellow yarn were made to look like hay and were given to children for acts of goodness performed during the parish’s Advent Camp in December. Deeds like helping younger children and picking up lost items were rewarded with these pieces of yarn to be placed in the manger at the end of the day.

Traveling the road of discernment
Carlos Garcia kneels at his seat while praying the rosary. He prayerfully awaits the Spanish Mass at his parish of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Aloha. This is the place where Garcia’s Catholic faith was rekindled. He is a senior at Aloha High School and is currently in the process of applying to be a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Portland.

'Spiritual battle' invoked often at conference that draws 800

SALEM — Catholic men need to awake from spiritual slumber and prepare to do battle for what’s good and true.

That was the main message at a conference organized by the Holy League Men’s Ministry Dec. 16-17 at St. Joseph Parish here.

Sacraments 101: Take a new look at central beliefs

For Christians, Jesus is not just a figure from history. The church holds that the resurrected Lord continues to act in the world. Catholics believe divine action comes most clearly through the seven sacraments, which Jesus initiated and which are still celebrated today in ritual actions and words: baptism, confirmation, Eucharist, penance, marriage, anointing of the sick and holy orders.

Being open to God in Oregon
Not everyone could afford the trek to Jerusalem, or a visit to Bethlehem for Christmas. Local retreats and pilgrimage sites began to emerge so more people could take advantage of going aside to open themselves to God, who reaches toward us from everywhere.

Society brings new zeal to new evangelization
This is a success story for the St. John Society. The society was founded in Argentina in 2001 to bring fallen away Catholics back to the church. This devotion to reaching people and participating in the new evangelization takes up a majority of the work for the society priests. Fulfilling this role for the church has been their motivation from the start.

Christ has come!

At this holy time of the year we rejoice once again that God has come among us as a man in the form of the innocent babe of Bethlehem, incarnate by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. In Jesus Christ we see God in the flesh, Emmanuel (“God with us”). I am reminded of the beautiful antiphon of the Eastern Church from the Royal Hours on Christmas Eve:

“God is with us! God is with us! Understand all ye nations, and submit yourselves, for God is with us!” (based on Isaiah 8:9-10).

Understanding mercy: You 'just do it'
At the proclamation of Pope Francis for a Year of Mercy, 20-year-old Taylor Kutz from the Portland Catholic Deaf community did not understand what the word “mercy” meant. Every Sunday Kutz would attend Mass at St. Philip Neri Parish on 17th and Division, and using American Sign Language, Kutz would sign “Lord, have mercy.” However, the hand shape and finger spelling of m-e-r-c-y were a lost concept. “What is mercy? How do you have a Year of Mercy?” he wondered.
