Extraction economy critiqued

The Interfaith Network for Earth Concerns last month hosted environmental journalist, author and film maker Bill Carter, who offered insights on the global mining boom with a special focus on the Pebble Mine proposed for Bristol Bay Alaska — home to the world's largest sockeye salmon run.

Those who fear the extraction economy in the region — and who see it as contradictory to stewardship of God’s creation — are joining forces to stop the mine. The Environmental Protection Agency has helped the environmentalists’ cause, issuing a surprise decision to evoke the Clean Water Act to stop the mine for now. Activists from churches and faith groups sought letters writers to ask federal lawmakers to keep mining out of Bristol Bay.

The Interfaith Network for Earth Concerns is part of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, a group that includes the Archdiocese of Portland.
