OMAHA — The Servants of Mary — Servites — this fall held a jubilee honoring 11 Sisters with an accumulated 635 years in the community. One of their number has served in Portland for 27 years.
Sister Barbara Kennedy, once called Sister Mary Marcia, has been a Servite for 50 years. She began her ministry as a teacher in Omaha then moved to Massena, NY. Following that, she served as guidance counselor at Marian High School in Omaha. She then served as coordinator at the motherhouse and helped establish the health care program for the Sisters. From there, she served as a therapist at the Family Enrichment Center in Omaha.
In 1986, Sister Barbara moved to Portland, where she and two other Servites established the Northwest Catholic Counseling Center. She continues ministering there now, providing mental health care to those in distress regardless of ability to pay.
