From kids in deeley bobbers and dads in Portland Timbers T-shirts to a man wearing a turtle suit, everyone wore green at St. Agatha School last weekend.

St. Patrick’s Day is officially Saturday, March 17, but these Southeast Portlanders got in to the Irish spirit a week early when St. Agatha celebrated its annual St. Patrick’s Day festival. Neighbors from the Sellwood and Moreland area came to listen to Irish-themed bands and sip Guinness, while younger attendees scarfed down green cotton candy and attempted to win more sugary treats at the cakewalk and other carnival games.

“Each year this just gets bigger and bigger,” said St. Agatha Principal Jeff Delegato. “It’s fun because everyone in the community joins us.”

Despite rainy weather, a pack of green-clad walkers and cyclists – some with the Kidical Mass bike ride – cruised through the neighborhood to kick off the festival. An Irish bagpiper led the front of the parade, and the Sellwood Middle School marching band followed at the end.

The Chancers, Fat Wednesday and Hyatus played live music, and a Mass was celebrated at the church in the early evening.
