When the city of Beaverton and the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon join forces, they aim to bowl over hunger – with soup.

The two entities have teamed up to coordinate “Soup’s On,” a fundraising event scheduled for Oct. 22 that will benefit the Oregon Food Bank. Tasters will be able to sample the best recipes from approximately 20 restaurants in the area and vote on their favorites.

Sister Delores Adelman is working closely with event planners assigned by the city, and as far as anyone can remember, it’s the first time the two entities have worked together on a project of this magnitude.

“I’m going on a wing and a prayer,” Sister Delores said. “I’ve had no experience doing something like this, so that’s why I’m so thankful for the guidance from the event planners.”

With 100 percent of the profits benefiting Oregon Food Bank-West, the event will be aligned with the Sisters’ overall push to highlight volunteerism while they celebrate the 125th year since the founding of their community.

When the theme of volunteerism was chosen, Sister Delores approached Beaverton Mayor Dennis Doyle to inquire about the biggest need in the community. He said, “Hunger.”

“It was surprising, as affluent as Beaverton seems, but that is a major need,” Sister Delores said.

Oregon Food Bank-West serves Washington County, where food distribution increased by 28 percent last year – an additional 40,000 people and nearly half-a-million more meals served. Since 2007-08, when the recession started, need has risen nearly 50 percent.

Everyone on the SSMO campus is getting involved. Monthly, groups of volunteers will help out at the food bank, with the first trip slated for March 12. Even the Valley Catholic Music School students plan to provide musical entertainment during the fundraising event, which will take place in their gymnasium.

Event coordinator Erin Hickey has been the main city contact for Sister Delores. The woman provides support with logistics.

“This fits in with our city’s mission in that we want to support the community,” Hickey said. “We’re building partnerships and supporting a good cause.”

She added that the city plans to continue involvement if the soup sampling fundraiser becomes an annual tradition.

“It’s been a lot of fun working with the Sisters,” Hickey said.

As the event gets closer, tickets will be available online at www.ssmo.org.
