Clean burning technology and natural gas are why we don’t have smog anymore, not because of the Green Movement.

Nix slapping
It distresses me that Beaverton Valley Times opinion cartoons suggest violence as a way to address problems. The cartoon of June 18, page A8, shows slapping over a tax bill, and similarly, the cartoon of March 19, A5, shows slapping about electronic glasses.

An inspiration
I grew up in Saint Charles Parish in Portland and was in the school for all eight grades (1959-1967), surrounded by good priests like the pastor, Father John Laidlaw and associate Father Dan Reynolds, as well the Holy Child nuns.

Regarding archbishop's Supreme Court statement
Here are comments received after Archbishop Alexander Sample responded to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said homosexuals can marry:

Follow law
To me, this means more than paying taxes. It means obey the laws of the land.

Beach or Mass?
The following Sunday I attended Mass in the same parish church and I noticed that many in the congregation wore clothing that seemed like beach attire for a celebration of the Eucharist.

Health scandal
Do you realize that our taxes are contributing to killing babies and funding immoral behavior?

Fight back
What other Archdiocese of Portland properties or revenues will be ruled as taxable using the “sole use” criteria? It is time for Oregon Catholics to fight back.

I see your bias
It’s terribly disingenuous to list the “top marginal tax rate” for any year when the discussion regards minimum wage.

On climate, trust what Church says, not politicians
Climate change deniers who identify as Catholics would do well to listen to scientists and the Church regarding environmental issues rather than American politicians.

John's a gem
He is always the happiest man in the room and loves to tell stories about his adventures.

Truth to power
She is watching from heaven to make sure we continue following the Spirit. Do not be afraid to speak truth to power.

How refreshing

How refreshing to read the articles by two young Catholics in the April 17 issue. Elisha Valladares-Cormier and Sophia Salter wrote on technology and faith.

Confront evil
Part of the mission of the Catholic Sentinel and other Christian publications should be to focus on evil in our world, and ways to combat or alleviate it.

A good prayer
I was happy to see the Archdiocese of Portland promote the Five First Saturdays,

Forgot Murnane

Your June 5 story on the life of the Carmelites was on target save for one item — who brought them to Eugene?

Thankful nuns
We have been a part of the Archdiocese for many years and hope to contribute as much as possible to the life of the Church in Oregon.

Please do a story on those deserving non-profits

I am a senior at La Salle Prep.  I am writing to convince you to include an article to encourage donation of money and/or time to non-profit organizations.

Gentle shepherd
Regarding “Influential pastor dies at age 88,” May 15: Father Reynolds was such a gracious, gentle shepherd. He allowed us to begin Queen Of Peace Players, a community theater, in our building and the summer classes for children who loved to act.

I remember him
He was always available to the youth of the parish and was one of the best vocation encouragers that I have ever met.

All fond of him
I remember him first as a young priest at St. Charles where I went to grade school. He was active in all aspects of the parish and school, and everyone was fond of him.
