Don't be reductionist

To the Catholic Sentinel:

While I cannot fault Officer Carlos Ibarra for his concern for and generosity toward a homeless father and his seven children, I cannot let his statement “I have so much in my life and they had nothing” go without comment.

As a homeless person, I am too-often aware of being viewed as simply someone who is lacking in material wealth, when, in truth, I have an abundance of intangible goods (as I’m sure this father and his children have). Helping the poor is a noble endeavor, but it ought to be done without taking a purely reductionist view of them.
