Don't blame victims

To the Catholic Sentinel:

With the recent rape scandal involving three University of Oregon basketball players along with the May 21 incident at Portland State University involving two students who were threatened by a gunman, in what ways can we stop from indulging in the concept known as “victim-blaming?”

Firstly, we should never use the faith as a reason to blame crime victims.

Using the faith as a means to justify “blaming the victim,” is not only superficial, but also will give people who need advocates the impression that we (as Catholics) are uncaring, unfeeling people.

Next, we should consider educating (for lack of a better word) ourselves in order to understand not only crime victims, but also groups who are marginalized by “the system.”

Just because many of us don’t personally know crime victims, and/or refuse to understand marginalized groups, does not mean we can’t reach out and advocate for people who need it.

Intrigued yet?

To close this, consider this verse from God’s Word:

“Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.” Proverbs 14:31
