7/3/2014 8:27:00 AM Civil ruling does not affect Church teaching on marriage
To the Catholic Sentinel:
Re: Judge repeals Oregon’s constitutional marriage amendment. Ruling is travesty, says Oregon Catholic Conference.
Oregon’s “Constitutional” marriage laws and amendments are about civil contract law, the state’s jurisdiction.
The Church doesn’t bless civil marriage contracts, nor does it recognize civil divorce.
The Sacrament of Matrimony is in the Church’s jurisdiction. The civil ruling on the state’s marriage contract law does not affect or impinge on the Church’s teaching about the sacrament of matrimony.
Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, will be gathering with his brother bishops in Synod to discuss the true meaning of marriage, not in history but in the lives of men, women and their children in our world today.
We should listen with open minds and hearts if we sincerely want to “advocate for genuine marriages and families in Oregon” and in the world.
