To the Catholic Sentinel:

One of the finest features of the archbishop’s column on marriage is that he did not doubt the legitimate authority of the U.S. District Court judge to rule on the constitutionality of the 2004 definition of marriage.

Although I, too, am appalled at the judge’s ruling, Oregon Catholics who know their history will recall that 90 years ago we benefitted from a similar ruling in the case of Pierce v. Society of Sisters.  In 1925 the U.S. Supreme Court found the compulsory public school law unconstitutional, a law that the voters had enacted.
