Lessons from the case of Troy Davis
To the Catholic Sentinel:
The JustFaith group of St. Pius Parish learned about the wrongful execution of Troy Davis during a presentation by Oregonians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (OADP.org) and Amnesty International.
Inspired by our pope’s and bishops’ statements against the death penalty, and by our JustFaith readings on Catholic social teaching, we attended the I am Troy Davis book signing as a group.
We heard that although there is a moratorium on executions in Oregon and in Washington, expensive death penalty cases are still being processed.
Frank Thompson, retired superintendent of the Oregon State Prison, discussed the damage suffered by employees working on an execution.
On the third anniversary of Troy Davis’s execution, Sept. 21, 2014, groups across the country, and in our parish, will be meeting to discuss the book and the death penalty.
