To the Catholic Sentinel:

Your second piece in the series on Senior Living was well done. My husband and I have been living in a senior residence for three years. It is not Catholic.

We have, however, had the opportunity to take the bus to Mass on Sunday. We have Communion service during the week, and Mass one time per month in an adjoining facility. Everything we need we have. In addition, the staff is competent, caring and kind.

When we came, we went to Mass on the bus with two other people. They are now in assisted living. About five other people with whom we shared meals have died.

For me, the sadness here is: How to cope with ongoing loss(es).

We hear of friends dying, we go to funerals. Relatives pass on and we mourn. But it’s not this relentless sense of loss, because life goes on.

We are in “independent” living. My husband’s memory is stable, but not very good. He is quite content and secure; I find it difficult in “independent” living. There are many couples where one spouse is frailer.

Father Steve Stobie once said his mom, when asked how she liked her new situation, said, “Fine, we’re all in a boat together and it is sinking.” True, but it is sinking at different times for different people. Thanks for your great work at the Sentinel.

Gloria Tsai, Wilsonville
