They should have licenses

To the Catholic Sentinel:

Next November, Oregonians will vote on SB 833. This common sense, public safety initiative should improve traffic safety and reduce the number of unlicensed and uninsured motorists.

California has new laws that relate to immigrants and provide a good example for Oregonians. The California Legislature passed a law to allow undocumented the right to a driver’s license.

Other new federal laws forbid a law enforcement official from detaining an individual on the basis of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold after that individual becomes eligible for release from custody, unless charged with a serious crime.

Another measure provides that only immigration consultants, attorneys, notaries public, and organizations accredited by the U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals are authorized to charge a fee for providing services associated with filing an application under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s deferred action program. Still another authorizes a community college district to exempt special part-time students from paying nonresident tuition.

Jesus asks us to respect and protect the stranger. We urge your support of Oregon SB 833 to allow the issuing of drivers cards to improve the safety of Oregon roads.

Mary Ryan-Hotchkiss
