Pope Pius XII holds flowers as he greets people on his 80th birthday, March 2, 1956, in this frame from a film in the Vatican Film Library.
To the Catholic Sentinel:
Pope Pius XII was the pope of my childhood. I was so greatly impressed by his resolve and strength in guiding the church through some of the worst times of the 20th century. I remember critics who stated he didn’t do enough to help those suffering from pogroms.
About eight years ago, my ongoing confidence in his goodness was affirmed while listening to an executive from the “Pave the Way” organization that researched Vatican documents that attested to the great good Pius did for those facing extermination.
I found this prayer and wondered if the Catholic Sentinel could print it for those interested in praying for his canonization. It goes:
“O Jesus, eternal High Priest, who didst deign to raise Thy faithful servant, Pius XII, to the supreme dignity of Thy Vicar on earth and to grant him the grace to be a fearless defender of the faith, a valiant champion of justice and peace, zealous in proclaiming the glory of Thy Most Holy Mother, a shining example of charity and all virtues, deign now to grant us, in view of his merits, the graces we ask of Thee; so that, made certain of his efficacious intercession with Thee, we may one day see him raised to the honors of our altars, Amen.”
