Archbishop Sample blesses an inmate after Mass at Santiam Correctional Institution.
To the Catholic Sentinel:
Thanks for the article on Archbishop Alexander Sample’s visit to Santiam Correctional Institution.
It is encouraging to find the present state corrections administration has continued programs that were in place when I worked at Santiam Correctional from 1983 until retirement in 1994.
At that time we provided: resume writing, GED programs (I have photos of the superintendent handing GED certificates to inmates), alcohol and drug treatment programs, sex offender treatment programs, and other release programs, as well as religious services.
Inmates enjoyed regular visits by family members and friends.
This program is outlined in the department rules, policies and procedures and has been in place since the institution opened.
Superintendents and directors of corrections come and go but the programs in the institutions continue on under the guidance of dedicated staff who care about inmates.
