Celibacy a way of life
Catholic News Service
Dominican Sister Joanna Collins wipes a tear from her eye during a July 25 Mass where 12 novices from the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia made their first profession of vows at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville, Tenn.
To the Catholic Sentinel:
That “celibacy lies at the heart of a priest’s identity and commitment” is erroneous. The Catechism states, “Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time.” Peter was married, as were a few other apostles.
Jesus was the bridegroom proclaimed by John the Baptist, “The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man, who stands and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice.” Celibacy is a vocation to a way of life, a free will choice, not a requirement.
