Two Sentinel print issues have come and gone since the death of Father Andrew Greeley without so much as a brief obituary, let alone a summary of his life and accomplishments. While his 125 thought-provoking books irritated some within the church, they were at least partially responsible for unmasking the darker side.
Cardinal Francis George said in an introduction to one of Father Greeleys’ books that “he has brought more people into the church than he has driven away.” I understand this to mean that on balance Father Greeley was good for the church. To take no notice of the passing of one of the great voices of the modern church is at best sloppy journalism and at worst an intentional slight. In either case I’m very disappointed.
