Pope, archbishop want us to join mission
Catholic News Service
Pope Francis smiles during a special audience with students from Jesuit schools June 7 in Paul VI hall at the Vatican.
To the Catholic Sentinel:
I read the report on Archbishop Alexander Sample’s installation Mass homily. I pray and offer my support to see to it that we all live up to the ideals he mentioned.
Archbishop Sample is right that we cannot convince the world of Jesus unless we ourselves are first convinced.
He also reminded us that some of our pastors have “seriously” let us down. He was speaking about child sexual abuse. In a transparent evangelizing spirit, what we all need to realize is that sexual abuse is just the most horrible example of abuse of power that those in the church, including clergy, can perpetrate. There are also, sadly, pastors who have shown that they are more interested in being in charge than in working together with the People of God to build up the Kingdom.
It was Pope Francis who told us during his inauguration, “Let us never forget that authentic power is service.” I am glad to see that our new pope and our new archbishop are so interested in making the people an important part of the church’s mission.
