To the Catholic Sentinel:

Honor killing is legal in Oregon?

Sister Helen Prejean likened the death penalty to honor killings that extract vengeance for a violation of a family member. Prejean said that families of victims are led to believe that the death penalty is how you get justice, how you get closure.

The recent tragic murder of Whitney Heichel in the Portland area again makes obvious the horrible damage violence does to families and the community.

Sister Prejean said jurors in death penalty cases tell of their anguish in making the decision to kill someone. Employees who carry out the state-sanctioned murder say they suffer horribly, too. More and more families of victims are now standing up and saying, “Don’t kill in our name.”

Don’t kill in my name. I choose life.
