Turn from nukes to life
Catholic News Service
Walking through the streets of west Baltimore, youth carry a peace banner during the funeral procession for peace activist Philip Berrigan in 2002.
To the Catholic Sentinel:
Outlines of human bodies drawn with chalk on Portland sidewalks reminded us that Aug. 6 was the anniversary of Hiroshima when the U.S. became the only country to use nuclear weapons, incinerating a quarter of a million people. Half of our country’s budget today goes to military efforts and the development of “better” nuclear weapons. At the same time Congress debates how much to cut from food support for babies, and school districts lay off teachers.
The U.S. bishops and the Holy Father have consistently written of the immorality of nuclear weapons.
Let us turn from this culture of death and violence, and prioritize instead on education and life.
