Good news for sows

To the Catholic Sentinel:

Have you heard the good news? Hormel is phasing out gestation crates by 2017.

The pens are so small that the pregnant sows who are confined to them can’t even turn around or lie down comfortably.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals less than two years ago called on Hormel, a giant meat packing company,  company to ban gestation crates.

Earlier, a PETA undercover investigator caught workers at a Hormel supplier in Iowa slamming newborn piglets’ heads against a concrete floor, beating, kicking, and shocking pigs, and more.

Banning gestation crates won’t stop these kinds of gratuitous abuses from happening.

But the move will at least alleviate some of the routine suffering that pregnant pigs are forced to endure on factory farms.
