Haiti needs to thrive on local structures

To the Catholic Sentinel:
I’ve often wondered if all NGOs working on aid projects are created equal, and if the cost/benefit sheet is always positive.
Unless local structures are created, local resources tapped, skill sets taught to people in the community, projects can’t be sustained and solutions won’t materialize. When the “outside agency” leaves, nothing will be left.
Some NGOs are massive bureaucracies, some are front groups for sketchy organizations. Red Cross is not immune from criticism. I hear good things about Mercy Corps. Some smaller scale, locally supportive efforts make a real difference.
