Lent in the Jubilee Year of Mercy begins next week, making this year’s season of solemn prayer, penance, charity and atonement unique. In Misericordiae Vultus, the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis asked that Catholics experience Lent this year “more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy.”

Reclaiming charity
For some people, charity is simply an act of giving, and we often associate the word “charity” with a handout or a contribution. But true charity is far more.

Advocating for social justice
From these powerful, relevant, and prophetic voices for change, we as Jesuit students were inspired to join in the art of bridge building. We created and became connections between not just black and white or marginalized and privileged, but between humans who deserve dignity and respect.

Little Sisters of the Poor Thank Supporters
What do 207 members of Congress, 50 Catholic theologians, 13 law professors, nine professional associations and two prominent women’s organizations have in common with the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, the American Islamic Congress, the General Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists and the International Society of Krishna Consciousness?

The truth about schools
The conspiracy theorists in Harney County have nothing over some ill-informed Portlanders and their attitudes about Catholic schools.

No true political home
Our parties have institutionalized meanness and senselessness as ways to gain the support of primary voters. No wonder so many young people are apathetic at ballot time. They are experts at sensing hucksters.

The Year of Mercy: Beginning at home
This Year of Mercy gives us all a chance to think about the opportunities for living mercy — opportunities missed and opportunities taken, opportunities practiced and opportunities ignored — that family life and marriage brings us.

Does your post make folks feel like toast?
Social media should, above all, be social and polite. We can make it so by practicing the meme that says: "A tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to break a heart. So, be careful with your words."

Church serves, strives to keep Christian presence in Bethlehem
Despite the declining numbers of Christians in Bethlehem and other parts of the Holy Land, the Catholic Church continues to serve the people there, especially those in most need of its help.

How does God do it?
The global Catholic Church is focusing on mercy for the next year. There’s a long beautiful story behind mercy, which appears to be one of God’s chief characteristics. All we can say is, thank you.

Let’s embrace Christmas for the hope that it represents, the light in the darkness, love amidst fear.

The blessings pets bring to our lives
In the beginning, the Lord made animals and brought them to Adam to name. God made humans greater than the animals, but he expects us to treat them with kindness and respect because they are his creatures.

The College Application Process: Like arranged marriage?
Going through the college application process is like going through an arranged marriage. You know it’s coming, and the only plausible alternative available to you is to leave your family and try and make it on a minimum wage job.

Our church is beautiful and messy

If we don't help refugees, the terrorists win
If we cave in to fear, if we turn our backs on refugees, if we're not up to the challenge to be the face of Christ to those who are suffering even when it's difficult for us, then the terrorists have gained another victory.
