Uneven paths
I’ve been tripping a lot lately. Sometimes I fall flat onto the sidewalk. It’s embarrassing and I wonder if anyone is watching when, in fact, no one probably is. When I get up I rub my hands together so the little pebbles embedded in my palms brush off.

The Capuchin
But we specialize in the ridiculous truth, isn’t that so, my young friends? If ever the Catholic idea could be distilled to a line, that would be the one.

Stand up for the little guy
There’s a certain political party, dominant in Oregon politics, which poses a large problem for Catholics.

'Love is needed': Local views on recent U.S. violence
Oregon Catholics, including priests who gave homilies last weekend, faced hard news: shootings of unarmed black men by police in Minnesota and Louisiana and an African American sniper who responded by killing five Dallas policemen. Like the rest of the nation, local Catholics sought meaning and wondered where the nation should go next.

From the Archives
If there is a set of men anywhere who are heartily disgusted with themselves for their dirty work, it is the men who went into the dark lantern wigwams of Know Nothing proscription.

To women who've had food thrown at them
I’ve never felt as isolated and alone as I did when I had two babies under the age of two.

Thanks, Sister
But let’s remember our dedicated women religious year round. Plan a visit. Write a note. Send a check. Frankly, we owe them.

Do not be afraid
In an ongoing national nightmare that got more terrifying in Minnesota, Louisiana and Texas, we can only call on the wisdom of our faith. Not all Oregonians or Americans share a devotion to Jesus, but surely “Love one another” and “Do not be afraid” are what everyone needs to hear now.

Something like a saint
I met the son I had again after a long winter and I feel like crowing and singing.

Free trade needs conditions
Often, the truth is so grand it can be found only in distinctions and conditions.

Milligrams of mercy
For some of us the Jubilee Year of Mercy has become our Jubilee Year of Guilt. There have been high expectations placed on our shoulders.

Mea Maxima Cuppa
Of course there will always be things we don’t necessarily want to do. But I submit that God will make them bearable because we are taking up his yoke rather than some newfangled hotness we think he wants us to carry.

Why we Catholics do what we do
Realizing the meaning of what Catholics do during Mass has enriched my faith, and has me looking forward to attending Mass every Sunday.

Catholic apps to keep you prayerful, biblical, up-to-date
Of course, one cannot forget their spiritual life amidst this new access to Catholic news. The Bible app is a no-brainer, but there are additional apps that provide the daily readings such as the Magnificat app.

To pot smokers: Recall common good
If marijuana use must be legal in Oregon — a big mistake — we should at least make sure those who use the drug don’t flaunt the common good. Day after day, regular Oregonians walking, biking or driving down the street must go through pungent clouds of smoke.

Oppose a demagogue
In The Philippines, the bloodthirsty president-elect is showing nothing but ignorance and malice when it comes to Catholicism, good sense and moral behavior. That even though 80 percent of his people adhere to our faith.

Home is where the Eucharist is
For the first time, I knew exactly what to do, what I was supposed to say and I did not need any guide to point me in the right direction—I was home.

What is a priest?
“What is a priest?” is a question I have asked all of my life since I was about six years old and noticed a brief cheerful Capuchin named Father Hugh at our dinner table every few weeks.

An open letter to Ted Wheeler
Dear Mayor-elect,
We thought you might like to meet us, the Catholics of Portland, and learn what we do and what we stand for. You might be surprised.

We could not have imagined
On the morning of March 13, 2013, my classmates and I came inside from break to see a live video of Vatican City projected on the board in front of us. Our fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Withers, was fascinated by what was happening and told us that the leaders of the church were about to make their decision on who was to be the new pope.
