Nuns hold candles at the feast of the Presentation of the Lord and World Day for Consecrated Life in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican last year.

On Sunday, Feb. 2, dioceses around the world will mark the World Day for Consecrated Life.

In 1997, Pope John Paul instituted this day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. Pope John Paul wrote of the different forms of consecrated life as “the many branches which sinks its roots into the Gospel and brings forth abundant fruit in every season of the Church’s life.”

The forms of diverse consecrated life include: Monastic Life, the Orders of Virgins, Hermits, and Institutes devoted to contemplation, Apostolic Religious Life, Secular Institutes, Societies of Apostolic Life, and new or renewed forms of the consecrated life.  Each form is described in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

As Catholics, our lives have invariably been touched by someone who has chosen the path of consecrated life. A teacher, retreat leader, author, priest, nun.

On Feb. 2, let’s not just pray for them and their decision to follow Christ’s light in this particular path, but thank them for their service and dedication.

Write letters, give out hugs — let them know that the decision they have made inspires us to live our lives in a more Catholic, apostolic and faithful way.
There’s a prime opportunity to do this coming up!

Archbishop Alexander Sample will celebrate Mass honoring those living in consecrated life at St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Monday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m., after which a reception will follow.

Come and pray for more vocations to the consecrated life and then thank those who have already given so much.
