The 2009, 2010, and 2011 State 6A Volleyball Champions have reloaded for the 2012 season. The Rams lost four matches in two days at the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas in September 2010. They have not lost a match since, and have amassed a winning streak of 75.
Rick Lorenz and his staff, Julie Taylor and Malcom Doi, went undefeated in 2012 with the help of Gatorade Player of the Year, state record holder, and current University of Oregon Duck Martenne Bettendorf. With the exception of Martenne, all of the starters from 2011 have returned including 6'3" middle Raina Hembry, who has committed to Tennessee, and 6'3” middle Kailee Johnson, who was second team all state in 2011 and is a top basketball prospect. Junior co-captain 5’10” Camille Foster, who was an honorable mention all-state setter last year, senior co-captain all-around 5’8” Lexie Skalbeck, and senior co-captain libero 5’8” Monica Gajda provide leadership and experience. Junior outside hitter 5’10” Natalie Batiste rounds out the returning starters.
The squad is also deep in talent. Much improved sophomore middle Whitney Turner figures to be a factor at the net, while sophomores Kealia Rosa, Olivia Skalbeck, and Vicky Gajda provide excellent back row play for the Rams. The new members of the 2012 squad include sophomore outside hitter Ramey Gardner, freshman middle Reed Jacobson, and freshman setter/hitter Selena Batiste.
“Our practices should be fun. We have 13 excellent players who want to work, improve and compete. Competition on a day-to-day basis will make us a better team. No one can take a breather, because there is always someone pushing you," Lorenz said, adding that the co-captains Lexie, Monica, and Camille have done a great job so far in bringing the team together.

They Falcones will face tough competition in the Sisters Tournament, as well as the 6A West Linn tournament. In league play, La Salle players know that when they take the floor against Estacada and Madras, they are in for a challenge.

STAYTON — The Regis Rams volleyball program is looking forward to another successful season in the 2A Tri-River League. In the 2011 season, they finished second in their conference and played in the first round of state playoffs. The Rams return head coach, Miriam Castillo, for her third season.
The Rams graduated five seniors last year, but with many starters returning, they have experience on the court and are expected to compete for the top of the league. Becca Lorenz, a junior outside hitter, and Makayla Lindemann, junior libero, were both named 2011 third team all conference and are among the key returners.
With only one returning senior, Liz Ayers, the Rams are a young team, but one to contend with. Sophomore Hannah Sherman and freshman Ashtyn Chamberlain, both setters and new to the varsity program, bring fresh energy to the team, as they work to fill the role left by 2011 all-conference Player of the Year, Whitney Koehnke. Other top returners include middle hitters, Kim Webb and Beth Lorenz, and defensive specialist Susie Mendez, all juniors.
In 2010, the Rams finished third in state, the highest finish in the school’s history.

St. Mary's Academy volleyball
This year, St. Mary’s Academy welcomes Laura Humphrey as the new head volleyball coach. She brings experience playing NCAA Division 1 volleyball and coaching for area public high schools and the Multnomah Athletic Club.
Well-attended summer camps, a strong mix of returning and new players and a vertically blessed team bode well for the coming season, Humphrey said.
“The returning players have really taken on a leadership role, volunteering to help out at middle-school camps,” she said.
Humphrey’s first goal is to continue the team’s strong academic record. Last year, St. Mary’s volleyball team won the OSAA/Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All-State Competition at the 6A level for the fourth consecutive year with a team average GPA of 3.90.
Other objectives include continuing to build a supportive, collegial team on and off the court and teaching student athletes to play both aggressively and smartly.
Humphrey coined the term “smaggressive,” and her players pointed out that it begins with SMA — perfect for the Blues.
Last year’s team finished the conference season with a 5-7 record, and Humphrey feels that St. Mary’s is poised to improve on those stats this season.
“I think we’re in a tough and competitive league, but we’re excited to put our team together and see how far we can go. We’re in a strong position, and it helps that several of our girls have played club volleyball together. It’s a very talented group of girls,” Humphrey said.
Returning players are Ari Busch, Lindsay Cannon, Kate Lynne Curtin, Ana Davis, Holly Fuhrer, Lucy Grein, Emma Peel, Sophie Peel, Anna Ritchie, Madison Sankovitz, Meagan Sherrington, Elise Sunderland, Natalie Wenzlick, Emma Adams, Juliet Anderson, Maggie Davison, Ella Hickcox, Melissa Kelly, Isabella Langhus, Emily McLeod, Maggie Smith, Ida Lindholm, Michelle McCall
