Central Catholic boys soccer
This young varsity boys soccer squad from Central Catholic returns 13 players from last year: Danny Allred, Cristian Arnston, Peter Bergmann, Daniel Blessinger, Tristan Cooper, Joseph Ell, David Heinrich, David Mack, Max Malany, Nick McAllister, Alejandro Moreno-Vega, Chris Palmer, and Joe Sorensen.
Adding to the youth of the team are several sophomores from last year’s JV team and even a couple incoming freshman.
With large freshman classes in 2011 and 2012, Central Catholic is fortunate be able to field three teams: Varsity, JV, and JV2. Fielding three teams, while maintaining a solid coaching staff, allows for greater development in the program.
“With the success of Central Catholic’s soccer program through the years, as a second season Central coach, I expect to continue the success of the program that I inherited,” says head coach Jimmy Weber. “With the strength, technical ability, and depth of players on all three teams we will be competitive in every game.”

Central Catholic girls soccer
The Central Catholic Girls Soccer team enters its 2012 season with optimism after making steady improvements in 2011. Last year’s team finished atop the Mount Hood Conference as co-champions, saw a record number of players earn all-league accolades, and included coach Nicole Strong (formerly Wilcox) being named conference coach of the year,
“Our biggest goal this year is to make a strong run in the state playoffs,” says Strong. “We made such great strides in the regular season last fall, now we want to make some noise statewide.”
The Rams are being led by nine returning starters from last year’s varsity team, including first-team all-league honorees Maheyla Molinari, a senior forward, senior defender Katy Segal, and junior midfielder Ellie Harrison. Other returning standouts include senior midfielder Lindsey Mattila, senior defenders Rhonda Teeny and Sarah Lance, junior forward/midfielder Bailey Whitehurst, and junior defenders Cassidy Coto and Maddie Belgrave.
“We have a nice mix of regulars who return to the varsity, role players who will be asked to step into more responsibility, and new faces who are adding a lot to our group,” Strong added. Those who will also be featuring in 2012 are senior forward/midfielder Payton Janssen, senior midfielder Hannah Neely, and sophomore goalkeeper Kate Schlegel.
Amongst the new additions to the first team are junior Alessandra Fazio — who dressed with varsity in the playoffs last year — senior Siobhan Lieuallen, sophomore transfer Lena DeYoung and sophomore Sierra Warren. MILWAUKIE — The La Salle Prep boys’ soccer team finished second last year in the Tri-Valley conference to eventual state champion Molalla.
As the boys began training this summer they had one goal in mind, says assistant coach Derek Ray: “We are expecting to compete for a conference title and make a deep run into the state playoffs.”
David Lillie, defensive player of the year and all-state selection, returns for his senior season as well as fellow senior Dakota Eisel, who was one of the Falcons' top goal scorers. Peter Nguyen is expected to anchor the back line for La Salle Prep in his final season at the school.
Looking at the schedule, they know that Molalla will once again be looked at as the team to beat in the conference but the Falcons are working hard to take their place at the top.

Marist girls soccer
EUGENE — The Marist High School girls soccer team is looking forward to their third year of playing at the 5A level in the Midwestern hybrid league after moving up from 4A in 2010. After two successful seasons which includes a run to the state semi-finals two years ago, this year’s Lady Spartans will be depending on a mix of strong leadership from older players and the ability of underclassmen to step up at the varsity level.
Among the veteran players being relied upon are fifth year senior all league midfielder, Mariah Konyn. With the loss of co-midwestern league MVP, all state player and all-time scorer Emma Cooney, Konyn, along with fellow senior striker Aubrie Hood, who is returning from a knee injury, midfielder Maggie Over, juniors Lily Storment and Hannah Hughes will need to be dangerous scoring threats by exploiting defenses and finding the net to compensate for the Spartans' tough schedule.
The league includes top 6A teams in Thurston of Springfield and nearby rival Sheldon of Eugene, along with re-emerging South Eugene and 5A state semi-finalist Willamette, which returns nearly all its top players.
"We have been blessed with great talent and accomplished players the last five years," says head coach Jennifer Konyn. "However, with several strong senior classes having graduated in succession, we will really need returning and new players to mesh quickly. Fortunately, we are seeing some of the stronger leadership we have ever had."

St. Mary's Academy soccer
The upcoming season is filled with opportunities for St. Mary’s Academy’s soccer team. It’s a chance for new beginnings, since nine varsity players graduated in the spring. Fortunately, Head Coach Rob Warnell has a talented roster of junior-varsity players from which to draw.
“Last year we had a strong JV team. They didn’t lose a conference game. We’ll rely on several of those players to move up and step up onto varsity,” said Warnell, who’s embarking upon his eighth year coaching soccer at St. Mary’s.
Last year was St. Mary’s first season with a designated home field, thanks to the Buckman Field Project. Prior to the completed renovation of the synthetic turf field in inner Northeast Portland in the spring of 2011, St. Mary’s jockeyed for space in parks or at Portland State University facilities.
Having a true home-field advantage made all the difference, according to Warnell.
“It was great. Our training was better. Everything we needed was there. We were dealing with fewer injuries because, at Duniway Park, we always had issues with uneven ground,” he said.
The varsity team went 11-6 last season, finishing third in the conference and making it through the first two rounds in the state playoffs. This year, Warnell would like to see the team place in the top two in the MHC.
One thing working in the team’s favor is that the Blues play in a summer league together, a great way to train and to integrate incoming freshmen into the program. Such discipline gives Warnell confidence that aggressive goals are obtainable.
“It will be a good challenge for the girls, and I think we have players who can do it,” he said.
Returning players include Camille Carlisle, Nesha Eaton, Coeli Fleming-Kelly, Rebecca Goodfriend, Maraya Keny-Guyer, Victoria Kirkland, Sienna Li, Rachael Magsarili, Marie-Louise “M-L” Marx, Maddi Mattecheck, Kathleen McIntyre, Karen Myers, Jennah Piddington, Hayley Stutzman, Sabrina Angel, Tanis Campbell, Nico Conahan, Victoria Dorsey, Aggie Fitch, Maddy Krenek, Claire McLaughlin, Emily Sunderland, Addie Jackson, Lei Lei Kramer, Kylie Morana, Emily Robinson.
