MOUNT ANGEL — The Father Bernard Youth Center here has received a $5,000 grant from Wilbur-Ellis, a local agriculture supply wholesaler. Don Robison, executive director of the Catholic retreat center, says the money will go toward maintenance, repairs and upgrading outdoor spaces.
The center opened a decade ago and has hosted about 20,000 retreatants since then.
In 1931, 5-year-old Robert Hughley stayed with friends while his mother joined a mournful caravan. A half dozen automobiles clanked 500 miles from Birmingham, Alabama, to central Louisiana to bury Robert’s uncle — at least the detached head. The uncle had been lynched and the body never found.
Hughley, a member of St. Andrew Parish in Portland who turns 91 in February, did not hear the gruesome details until he was in his 50s with a wife and six children. Even then, he’d had to badger his mother to explain why everyone spoke of the funeral in whispers.

WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump told the nation in his inaugural address that it need not fear in the days ahead. "There should not be fear," Trump said Jan. 20. "We are protected and we will always be protected. We will be protected by the great men and women of our military and law enforcement, and, most important, we will be protected by God."
