WATCH: A grandson of slaves ascends to leadership

In 1931, 5-year-old Robert Hughley stayed with friends while his mother joined a mournful caravan. A half dozen automobiles clanked 500 miles from Birmingham, Alabama, to central Louisiana to bury Robert’s uncle — at least the detached head. The uncle had been lynched and the body never found.

Hughley, a member of St. Andrew Parish in Portland who turns 91 in February, did not hear the gruesome details until he was in his 50s with a wife and six children. Even then, he’d had to badger his mother to explain why everyone spoke of the funeral in whispers.
