The Ali family — Ahmed; Rasha; Mustafa, 11; and Almas, 5 — fled Iraq in 2014 after living in fear for years. Because of a journalism career with Western ties, Ahmed was a target of al-Qaida, which at one point occupied his house and used it as a base.
Next to her heart it dangles — an outline of the country she loves and fled. Printed within its gold boarders is the name of her husband, “Ahmed,” whose life was threatened for years.

In the days after the presidential election, many Americans felt disillusioned and took to the streets in protest. Most demonstrators were peaceful, including in Oregon. But some Portland protesters turned chaotic, and police made more than 100 arrests.
Archbishop Alexander Sample, at a U.S. bishops’ meeting in the nation’s capital, sent a statement back to Oregon seeking calm.
“While peaceful protest and standing up for our own views have been hallmarks of the American experience and our First Amendment rights, some of these demonstrations have turned destructive and violent,” the archbishop wrote.

In his letter, Pope Francis said he formally was giving all priests permanent permission to grant absolution to those who confess to having procured an abortion. While many bishops around the world, and almost all bishops in the United States, routinely grant that faculty to all their priests, Pope Francis had made it universal during the Holy Year.
