Anti-poverty grants celebrated

It was a day to celebrate the good achieved by donations from Catholics. The Archdiocese of Portland last week convened representatives from two local anti-poverty organizations that have received national grants from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. The collection is taken up around the nation just before Thanksgiving.

Transitional deacons set for ordination

Two men studying for the priesthood will be ordained transitional deacons. Matthew Libra will be ordained at St. Edward Parish in Lebanon by Archbishop John Vlazny on Sept. 11. The Mass of Ordination will begin at 11 a.m.  Jeff Eirvin will be ordained on Oct. 7 at St. Peter Basilica in the Vatican.

As abuser seeks freedom, victim of Catholic school horror carries on
BALTIMORE — When Elizabeth Ann Murphy was growing up in South Baltimore, she loved sneaking into the choir loft at St. Mary, Star of the Sea. Hiding away in the quiet church, the youngster would sit still and stare at the tabernacle.

“I always really had a strong sense of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist,” remembered Murphy, one of nine children whose family home was directly across the street from the parish. “I loved the church and I loved God.”

John Merzbacher nearly shattered that deeply held faith.

German bishops OK guidelines
Germany’s Catholic bishops have approved new guidelines for handling claims of sex abuse by church workers to facilitate cooperation with law enforcement bodies. Extension of the guidelines to teachers at Catholic schools and other lay church employees would help “bring greater security” to children in church institutions, a spokeswoman for the bishops said.

Catholics, Muslims mull violence
As Muslims around the world celebrate the end of their monthlong Ramadan fast around Sept. 10, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran encouraged Catholics and Muslims to work together in overcoming violence among followers of different religions. The cardinal-president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue said it is important that teachers and religious leaders work together to promote peace and harmony in their communities.

Polish Catholic newspaper hailed
A national Catholic newspaper has become Poland’s top-selling weekly, outstripping its secular competitors. Gosc Niedzielny (Sunday Guest), a 92-page tabloid owned by the Archdiocese of Katowice, is the country’s highest-circulation weekly with more than 144,000 copies.
