Archbishop Sample thanks the Royal Rosarians for the gift of a rose bush, given in his honor to St. John Fisher Parish.

Since Portland’s Rose Festival began more than 100 years ago, the city’s Catholic archbishop has never been granted the honor of blessing the festival. That is, until this past weekend.

“I want you to know how humbled I am by the honor that you have extended to me,” said Archbishop Alexander Sample during his message to the crowd. “It’s an honor for me personally, but I also take it an as honor for the Catholic community here in Portland which is also a very vibrant and important part of our wider community.”

WATCH: Former fashion model with indulgent past wants others with same-sex attraction to know joy of faith, chastity

TIGARD — Twenty-five years ago, Paul Darrow would march in New York’s gay pride parade. He’d pause with peers outside St. Patrick Cathedral to shout obscenities, hoping to interrupt Mass. Catholicism was the enemy.

Now, Darrow counts nothing more thrilling than bowing his head and receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.

“It was sex, drugs and disco — did I mention rock and roll?” said Darrow, a former fashion model who spoke April 4 at St. Anthony Parish here. He discussed Courage, the spiritual support group that led him to rejoin the church and embrace chastity.
