The St. Mary’s Academy Varsity golf team took second in state. But there is more to the story.
“This team is one of the finest group of young women I have ever had the privilege to coach,” says Sara Salvi assistant golf coach.
“They are terrific golfers, but more importantly, strong, unselfish and supportive teammates – the best that the sport has to offer.”
With an average 3.91 cumulative grade point average, the team was named the 2014 Oregon Dairy Farmers Academic All-State Girls Golf Champions. The team’s GPA was the highest among all girls golf teams at all classification levels.
Dan Friedhoff, head coach, notes that the team won the Mount Hood Conference tournament and set a school record for low score in the first round. Friedhoff is just as proud of the GPA honor.
In addition to the team’s first place win at the district tournament, junior Alison Brennan was tournament medalist. Brennan also made the All-State Team, finishing sixth in the state. In addition to Brennan, St. Mary’s Academy golf team members who competed at the state tournament included senior Ari Busch, junior McKenzie Vanko, junior Elizabeth Wiley, freshman Kailan Mink and freshman McKenna Vanko.
