Junior Elizabeth Johnson of Central Catholic hopes to repeat as district champ and go far in state.
The 2013 tennis season ended with the Central Catholic Girls Tennis team as Mount Hood conference district champions. The team went on to place fifth in state.
The 2014 team has returned nine players who lettered in 2013 led by top player Elizabeth Johnson. The team also returns seniors Camille Foster, Nora Pinder, Anna Puetz, Catherine Anderson and Maddie Belgrave. The junior class returnees are Johnson, Isabel Meyer, Emma Anderson and Erin McGinnis. The sophomore class returnees are Julia Johnson and Taylor Inskeep. “In my sixteen years, this will be one of my strongest teams," says Dwayne Tyner, the coach.
Adding to the mix this year is Rebecca Rieser, Valerie Truong, Gabi Raab, Maria Beer, Luca Breslau, Maddie, Ali Corwin and Catherine Johnson.
The team is expected to be tough with 2013 district champion in singles, Elizabeth Johnson, and the fifth place finisher in singles, Julia Johnson. There will be strong representation in doubles with Camille Foster/Isabel Meyer (quarterfinalist in 2013) and a solid team in Nora Pinder/Anna Puetz.
"Our goal is to capitalize on our strong finish to last year and improve on our placement in state tournament in May," Tyner says.
