The 14 members of the Central Catholic Ski Racing team are looking forward to a successful season, with an eye on earning berths for the state race championships in March, hosted by the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association.

Co-Captain James Cory leads the boys’ team that includes racers Connor Arenz, Isaac Grebicz, Nick Minor, Gerrick Latham, Sean Anderson, Will Nielsen, Jack Halsey and Calvin Gall.  Sarah Carroll is team co-caption, leading the girls’ squad that includes racers Ellie Schmidt, Natalie Hansen, Samantha Zuniga-Levy and newcomer Ella Slupesky.

Alpine racers compete in Three Rivers League races on Saturdays in January and February. Racers compete in six league races at Mount Hood resorts, skiing both slalom and giant slalom disciplines, earning team and individual points that will ideally lead them to the state competition. Last year, the boy’s team qualified to compete at state, with racers James Cory finishing 29th and Hayden Fawcett finishing 36th overall, out of more than 120 male athletes.

Sarah Carroll and Samantha Zuniga-Levy qualified to compete as individuals, finishing 58th and 65th overall.

Dryland training is underway for the team with a pre-season training trip scheduled for White Pass, Washington in December. Sean Mailey is the assistant Ram ski racing coach for this season and is working to get the athletes in shape for the start of the regular season on Jan. 11.  The team trains Tuesday nights at Mt. Hood Skibowl, along with the Wilson High School ski team.
