BEAVERTON — The Valley Catholic boys basketball team enters the season with depth and experience. Nine letter winners are returning from last year’s team, which brought home the fifth-place trophy from the 3A state tourney.
Joel Sobotka returns for his second year as head coach of the Valiants after leading Valley Catholic to a record of 23-5 last year, including an undefeated record in Lewis and Clark League play. All-state seniors Jarrett Gray and Gabe Taylor will bring leadership and experience to the Valiants.
Returning senior starter and captain Carter Buuck will be counted on for his versatility and leadership and returning junior Tysen Prunty brings energy and toughness. Junior guard Kazuma Lane will be counted on to play a bigger role this year. Senior Alex Butz and juniors Drew Vanderzanden and David Baglai should provide the Valiants with depth and experience in the post.
The season starts tough with Blanchet and La Salle on the docket.
“Our veteran leadership and experience will be critical for us as we start the season and face some difficult challenges,” said Sobotka. “I know I feel more comfortable with the players in my second year and I’m sure they feel more comfortable with me, the culture of our program and our system. Our focus is to have extraordinary focus and commitment each day and to continue improving and play our best basketball in March.”
