In the first ever Holy War soccer match in Oregon, the state's two 6A schools faced off, with Jesuit coming out ahead 2-1 over Central Catholic in a close game. It was the third title for Jesuit in four years.
Jesuit changed up their look for the championship, putting 6A player of the year Christo Michaelson on defense.
The game's tone was set early when a defender and goal tender for Central worked at cross purposes, the defender tapping back a header and the goalie charging out to play the ball. The header went high over the keeper, and Jesuit's Chris Chertrude was on the spot to tap it in. It was the first goal the tough Ram defense let in during the playoffs.
Henry Rocker of Jesuit headed in an insurance goal at the start of the second half.
Central Catholic's Peter Bergmann drove home a goal after the Rams started to apply furious pressure. That made for a tense finish, but it was too little too late.
