The Champions of Faith Benefit Dinner was started as a result of the closing of the Portland Chapter of the Christ Child Society.

The women of the Christ Child Society were the primary benefactors of Camp Howard since the inception of the camp in 1952. The women built two of the cabins in the 1990s, kept the chapel (named for their founder) outfitted with the particular needs for Mass and services, and for their last 20 years, donated about $6,000 per year for scholarships to the camp for the neediest of children.

The women closed the Portland Chapter of the national organization in 2009, not before donating $150,000 to CYO/Camp Howard for the construction of basketball courts at the camp, their last official action. The courts were completed in 2010.

Sister Krista von Borstel, executive director at CYO/Camp Howard, talked with the executive board about beginning a fundraiser to replace the generosity of the Christ Child Society. After much discussion, it was decided that a fundraiser dinner would begin in 2011. The money raised at the event would be used in four areas with the money divided up among the quadrants. Scholarships for CYO sports and Camp Howard were the first two areas of need, followed by improvements to camp facilities and programs. The final area of need was endowment. The executive board blessed the plan.

After two Champions of Faith dinners, $200,000 has been raised.
Officials say scholarships for Camp Howard and CYO sports have been a saving grace to families and youth. The pool has been heated and Star Deck Tower rebuilt.

The endowment has grown to $50,000. All of the dollars raised at the dinner have gone directly to the programs with none going to administration. The next Champions of Faith dinner will be held at the Oregon Convention Center Tuesday, Oct. 1.
