While some folks are sitting in cubicles at work, Molly Gill is busy navigating through gym mats, pommel horses, vault equipment and a pit filled with rigid foam.

A girls gymnastics coach at Multnomah Athletic Club, Gill’s passion for sport has been with her all her life — a passion the Catholic Youth Organization this year recognized by awarding her the Athletic Director of the Year Award.

An Ohio State University graduate who studied physical education, Gill has been a gymnastics coach off and on for the past 20 years, and has taught and worked in both Catholic and public schools.

Known for her organizational skills and tenacity for sharing the lessons sports can teach kids, Gill received the honor for her work as athletic director at St. Matthew Parish in Hillsboro. She built participation over the last few years.

“I really wanted to see the program grow, so I worked hard to do that,” said Gill. “I have a great support staff with my commissioners, and we all want to see the CYO programs grow and flourish.”

Gill says the success of CYO is due to the relationships built with others around the principles of the organization as well as teaching children not just games, but lessons and attitudes they’ll be able to carry with them throughout life.

“Sport is so important for children,” said Gill. “It teaches discipline, overcoming adversity and having hope in your skill building — having hope in something you don’t see yet — and isn’t that what our faith tries to teach us?”
