Central names new athletic director
Laura Jaeger has been named athletic director at Central Catholic High School in Southeast Portland.
Jaeger steps into the position after 15 years as dean of students and three years as a teacher and coach.
“Laura is an ideal candidate for this position,” said John Garrow, principal. “She is both a respected administrator and an outstanding coach with exceptional organizational and communication skills. Our coaching staff is thrilled to have her lead the Ram athletic programs and we all look forward to the contributions she will make. “
According to the Oregon School Activities Association, Jaeger is currently the only female athletic director of a 6A co-ed high school in the state. She joins Anna Maria Lopez of St. Mary’s Academy as the state’s only other female athletic director in 6A.
Central Catholic is a perennial athletic powerhouse in many sports. In 2012-'13, the girls basketball and boys cross country teams won state championships, while the boys football, basketball, lacrosse, baseball and girls volleyball teams went deep into state playoffs. Central Catholic students compete in 24 different sports.
“This is a dream job for me and the best part is that I can continue to work within the Central Catholic community,” said Jaeger. “As dean, I loved contributing to the education of our students. Now, moving into the athletic department provides another way for me to help develop our students into fine young men and women through sports.”
Jaeger is a native of Milwaukee, Wis. where she attended Northwest Lutheran High School before moving to Portland to attend Concordia University. She played basketball throughout her college career and earned a degree in education from Concordia 1989, with minors in both theology and business. Following graduation, she played professional basketball in Germany 1989-'91. She returned to Portland in 1992 when she was named the women’s head basketball coach and adjunct instructor at Concordia.
She began teaching physical education and wellness at Central Catholic in 1995. She was also head coach and assistant coach for soccer and softball from 1995 to 2005 and also directed several off-season leagues and camps. She coached basketball from 1995 to 1998 at nearby Cleveland High School in Portland.
Jaeger says that as a young woman starting her career, she set and has since met several goals for herself, including her aspiration to one day work as a high school athletic director. “After more than two decades in education, the time was right me to step into this position here at Central.”
Jaeger replaces Natalie Osburn who served briefly before accepting the post of principal at Gladstone High School.
Presently there are 820 students enrolled at the school located at SE 24th and Stark.
