No Catholic high school will take home a state football title this year.

In 5A action, Marist lost 46-20 to Sherwood in the championship game at Jeld Wen Field. Marist had wins of 68-22, 28-16 and 40-8 to get to the title contest.

But Marist's fine defense had a tough time with Sherwood's offense, which employed plenty of misdirection and trickery. The Bowmen scored early on a long run. Then Sherwood's offense stuffed Marist on the Spartans' first few drive attempts. A Marist fumble led to another Sherwood touchdown.

Marist scored early in the second quarter, but the pattern of Sherwood dominance would continue. Marist then scored more than the Bownmen in the second half, but it was too much to make up. Sherwood finished with 428 yards on the ground and six touchdowns running.

Jesuit romped through early rounds of the 6A bracket with wins of 65-6, 63-7 and 49-13. But on Dec. 1, the team was edged by Sheldon, 35-28 in a close-fought semi-final game.

The Crusader offense was stymied early by the Sheldon defensive line. An interception and a penalty halted two Jesuit first half drives as Sheldon took an early 14-0 lead. But as the half expired, Jesuit went for it on 4th and goal from the 2 and Joey Alfieri scored. That made it a game again. Then Jesuit started the second half with a drive to tie the game.

Sheldon responded fast with good kickoff return, a big pass and then a touchdown run. Jesuit came back with a clock-eating drive and another score to tie the game at 21. But less than a minute later, Sheldon scored again. Then the Irish defense got stingy, giving the ball back to their offense, which scored on a 24-yard pass. Jesuit came back with a quick 56-yard touchdown throw of its own, but there would be no more scoring on the day.

Central Catholic, which beat Jesuit during the regular season, had wins of 61-14 and 35-21 before running into Tigard, which pulled a 43-37 quarterfinal win in rainy Hillsboro. Tigard's defense stiffened in the second half. Central Catholic quarterback Aidan Wilder was 10 of 28 for 292 yards and three touchdowns. Cameron Scarlett caught five passes for 174 yards and one touchdown for the Rams.

In 4A, returning champion La Salle Prep of Milwaukie was upset in the quarterfinals, 23-21 by Ontario.

In 3A, Blanchet Catholic of Salem fell in the first round to Rainier, 39-12.
Regis of Stayton sustained a first round loss in 2A, edged 29-26 by Grant Union.
