Cindy Garcia with Holy Family Parish caught a 22 ¾-inch trout.
It was a sunny morning at Camp Howard recently as Holy Family Parish campers were fishing at the pond.
Most folks were catching 10-inch trout.
Cindy Garcia sat on a blue lawn chair, fishing with a trout pole, six-pound test line, baited with a big fresh night crawler. She had a little red and white bobber, the type usually used for small sunfish or perch, hooked on her line.
All of a sudden her pole bent halfway over and the bobber disappeared. She stood up and the fish bounced out of the water, and everyone saw that she had a whopper on the line. Other campers started heading toward Garcia to help her land the fish. The trout kept breaking through the water.
Witnesses thought there was no way she was going to get the fish to shore. She had way too light a line, no net, her drag was set too tight – the line would snap and that would be that.
It would be the story about the one that got away.
Despite the odds, Garcia brought the fish right up and onto the bank. A huge cheer went up. She had on her line the biggest fish ever caught at Camp Howard.
